IEFI’s Outreach to Children in Remand and Correctional Homes

Assalaamu Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh.

At the Islamic Education and Faith Initiative (IEFI), we believe that every child deserves hope, guidance and the opportunity to build a better future. Regardless of life’s circumstances, every young person has the potential to grow into a responsible and productive member of society when shown compassion, sincere mentorship and positive direction.

For several years, one of our most consistent welfare and Da’wah programmes has been our  visits to juvenile remand and correctional homes, under the dedicated leadership of Bro. Abduljeleel Adebanjo. This outreach has helped given us deep insights to how many teachable moments and how simple efforts could translate and reform lives.

This initiative is built on the Islamic values of mercy (Rahmah), sincere advice (Naseehah) and the belief that no one should be defined solely by their past mistakes or present circumstances.

A Ministry of Presence

Our visits are not merely ceremonial.

We intentionally spend quality time with the young residents through:

  • Weekend Islamic lectures and reminders.
  • Interactive discussions on faith, character and personal responsibility.
  • Motivational sessions that inspire hope and positive life choices.
  • Participation in special programmes organised by the facilities.
  • Distribution of modest gifts and welfare items whenever approval is granted by the management of the homes.

More importantly, we listen.

Many of these children simply need someone willing to hear their stories, encourage them and remind them that Allah’s mercy is greater than any mistake they may have made.

 

Lessons We Have Learned

Our outreach has transformed not only the lives of the children we visit but also the hearts of our volunteers.

Among the many lessons we continue to learn are:

Every Child Has a Story

Behind every child is a unique journey. Some have experienced poverty, neglect, broken homes, abuse, peer pressure or difficult life circumstances. Their stories remind us never to judge people without understanding their struggles.

Guidance Can Change Destinies

Many of the young people are eager to learn, ask questions and embrace positive values when given genuine care and consistent mentorship. A single conversation rooted in sincerity can redirect a life.

Compassion Is More Powerful Than Condemnation

Our experience continually reinforces an important Islamic principle: people grow best in environments of mercy, encouragement and hope rather than shame and rejection.

Prevention Begins with the Community

These visits remind us that families, schools, mosques and communities all have important roles in nurturing children before they become vulnerable to harmful influences. Investing in young people early is one of the greatest forms of social responsibility.

We Receive More Than We Give

Although we visit to serve, we often leave inspired ourselves. The resilience, honesty and desire for a better future displayed by many of these children deepen our gratitude and strengthen our commitment to serving humanity.

Looking Ahead

By the permission of Allah (SWT), IEFI hopes to expand this outreach through:

  • More regular mentorship sessions.
  • More Islamic educational materials.
  • Personal development workshops.
  • Greater collaboration with correctional authorities and community partners.
  • Structured post-release support and mentorship where appropriate.

Our aspiration is not only to visit these young people but to become part of a support system that helps them return to society with renewed confidence, stronger faith and a positive vision for the future.
